Thomas Scully is a general partner with Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, the most active US private equity investor in healthcare.

He was formerly the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), where he had an instrumental role in designing and passing Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage legislation and initiated the first public reporting and disclosure for comparative quality among hospitals and other healthcare providers. He was also President and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals, which represents 1,500 privately owned hospitals.

Mr. Scully will give a special lecture on reimbursement through the eyes of CMS at the Foundation’s Symposium in October.

He recently joined the Foundation’s Council, a dedicated group of goodwill ambassadors who work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to provide advice and assist with raising funds and building awareness. He also serves on the Board of Directors at several organizations, including InnovAge, Shields Health Solutions, the Health Management Academy, Select Medical Corporation, Emerus, and CareSource Management Services. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, the George and Barbara Bush Foundation, UVA Health System, and the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University.

He earned his BA from the University of Virginia and his JD from Catholic University.

“Reimbursement challenges can stall even the most promising technologies by limiting patient access,” said Foundation Chairman Neal F. Kassell, MD. “Tom is uniquely positioned to share his insights with members of the focused ultrasound industry at a time when many of the leading companies are moving beyond clinical trials into commercialization.”

The Foundation’s 8th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound will be held October 23-27, 2022. The event will take place in-person in Bethesda, Maryland, and virtual attendance will also be available.
